Check out this awesome video – Trace is performing his form blindfolded.

We asked Trace some questions – to find out what has motivated him to accomplish so much. Read his very insightful answers below:

 Enter Trace:

You have accomplished so much in such a short time. Tell us a little about what you have done.

I played all of the major sports growing up, at the select level but I never really felt passionate about them.  It was not until I got involved in martial arts that I really felt I had found a sport that drove me.  A sport I felt passionate and committed to.

I started when I was 10 and have never taken a break from it.  In the six years I have been in martial arts:

  • – I have won 6 Creative and Extreme Weapon World Championships
  • – 10 time overall champion (choreographed to music) in four leagues (ATA, AOK, TKO and USKA)
  • – Won Twenty One Texas State Championships (multiple leagues)
  • – Competed in 2011 & 2012 ESPN Martial Arts Invitational Tournament Creative Weapon overall Champion– Televised World Wide
  • – Been Interviewed on Good Morning America Interview – 2 times
  • – Preformed at American Airlines Sky Ball with 3,000 in attendance
  • – Been featured in numerous Martial Art magazine and Star Telegram Newspaper stories and bios
  • – Have formed an elite martial arts team:  Tforce.  Website is tfoceelite.com
  • – Am a nationwide model with Campbell Talent Agency

I am still working to be better, to grow and find areas that drive me.

How do you train? How often?

I train everyday.  I can’t remember a day I didn’t train or teach.

I have never looked at it as work but rather as means of getting better and challenging myself.

I have come to realize winning happens during practice not during the tournament.

What motivates you? Why do you train and compete?

I have the utmost respect for my competitors.

Although when we are competing we are fierce rivals we are actually close friends after the tournament.  I even train with many people I compete against.

I never look to my competitors to drive me to improve, I look to myself to do that.

I compete because I love the challenge of going up against the best in the world, I compete because I love to benchmark myself against others but mostly I compete because of the love of the sport.

There are some days when you compete 6 times, back-to-back. How do you manage it? Do you have any tips for athletes on back-to-back performance?

The most I have ever competed in was 8 events in an 8 hour period.  Many of the events have numerous rounds so it is nearly non stop all day.  I have also done this back to back where one day might be the qualifier and the next day the championship.

Hydration is key but every athlete needs that edge to get to the next level.  I can’t imagine being successful without IgY Recovery Proteins.   IgY truly gives me that edge I need when I should have nothing left.   The biggest benefit for me is using IgY after training.  Without IgY I would certainly have to reduce my training time and without training it’s hard to win.

There are a ton of people with talent but the best have talent and a strong work ethic.  So to harness both you have to have that edge that lets your body continue to regenerate and stay strong.

What is your favorite thing that you are currently doing or have done?

As much as I love to compete I love teaching more.  I have 7 or more private lessons a week with kids from 5 to 21 and I also train martial arts masters.  I also run seminars all over the nation, at least once a month.

The feeling of passing on what I have learned to others, watching them improve and then going on to win in tournaments is awesome.  I cant imagine anything cooler than influencing the success of others.

What is your #1 goal in the next year?

I have won world and state titles in multiple leagues but not all of them.  My goal is to win a title in every league over the next 2years.

This year I am competing in over 35 tournaments worldwide.

Not everything is about winning but it really lets you know how you rank against the best black belts in the world.  That is the thrill!

What is your #1 goal in the next 5 years?

I am planning on going to college when I graduate HS for a business degree during the day and opening my own state of the Martial Arts School that I will work during the evening.  My family and I have lined up the funding and reached out to other world champions like Nick Bateman, Steph Verschuren, Rory Bratter, David Rodriguez, Christy Jackson, Master Lee, Master Sutton, Regan Strand and too many others to mention.

You also teach a lot – what tips do you have for someone that is interested in getting involved in martial arts?

Nothing comes easy in any sport.  There a few true naturals that can do something without practicing.

If you’re like me you are going to really have to work for what you want.  You can’t let yourself get frustrated, it won’t help in fact it will discourage you.  When you feel those times of frustration coming on walk away from it, clear your head and then get back to it.

Mostly compete against yourself.  Are you better than you were the last time?  Stronger, faster more confident?  Measure your progress against your competitors but always remember “to compete is to win”
